Beta Lambda - Faculty Advisors
These are our wonderful faculty advisors that are fellow men of Sinfonia and are exceptional pieces to the making of history in music. They are very helpful in our everyday lives as this chapter continues to grow in music, brotherhood, and the advancement of music.
David A. Turrill is Director of Bands and Assistant Professor of Music at Muskingum University, where he conducts the Muskingum University Wind Ensemble, Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds, the Muskie Marching Band, and teaches applied trumpet, courses in conducting and music education. Dr. Turrill also performs with the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra and the Muskingum University Faculty Brass Quintet.
Dr. Turrrill received the Doctor of Musical Arts degree in trumpet performance from Michigan State University, where he studied trumpet with Rich Illman and Michael Bowman. In 2009, Dr. Turrill recieved a Dissertation Completiion Fellowship and the Special College for Research Abroad Money (SCRAM) award to pursue research in Germany and Bologna, Italy for his doctoral document "Trumpet Writing in the Sinfonias and Concerti of Giovanni Martini." In addition to the academic research, Dr. Turrill studied Baroque trumpet with Edward Tarr and Barry Bauguess. Performance highlights while at Michigan State include being featured with the Michigan State Chamber Orchestra in performances of Aaron Copland's Quiet City on their Austrian tour, and performing Antonio Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets with the Michigan State Philharmonic Orchestra. Dr. Turrill also maintains an active schedule as a freelance trumpet player and teacher having performed with the orchestras of Grand Rapids, Lansing, West Michigan, Saginaw Bay, Battle Creek, Jackson (MI), Livonia, as well as the Ohio Valley Symphony and the West Virginia Symphony orchestras.
Dr. Turrill recieved the Bachelor of Music degree in music education from Ohio University and dual Master of Music degrees in conducting and trumpet performance from Ohio University, where he performed with OhioBrass, the faculty brass quintet. Mr. Turrill also taught public school for twelve years throughout Southeast Ohio, where his bands consistently received superior and excellent ratings in concert and marching adjudicated events.
Dr. Turrill is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, the International Trumpet Guild, the National Association for Music Education, the Ohio Music Education Association, the College Band Directors National Association, and the Ohio Private College Instrumental Conductors Association.
Harsha Abeyarante has given performances in cities that include Manhattan, Chicago, Charleston (WV); Portland (OR); and Columbus (OH). Critics have referred to his playing as "poetic" (Sunday Lieder) and "mature and expressive" (The Jeffersonian). In recent years, he has been a soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Sri Lanka, Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra, and the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds. In the Fall of 2010, while on sabbatical, he performed all-Chopin piano recitals at Graves Piano in Columbus, Jacksonville University (FL), and Marshall University (WV), and studied with Peter Takacs, esteemed teacher and pianist at the Oberlin Conservatory.
Abeyaratne has collaborated with, amongst others, saxophonist George Wolfe, trombonist Mike Stroeher, and jazz violinist Randy Sabien, who are all highly respected musicians. Widely being sought out as a pedagogue, Abeyaratne has been asked to adjudicate competitions in the Ohio and West Virginia regions, such as the OMTA/Graves piano competition, Tuscarawas Ribbon Festival, and the Thursday Music Club. His awards and grants include the 2010 Ball State University School of Music Alumni Achievement Citation Award, a sponsoring of a solo recital by the United States Embassy in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and a faculty development grant to sponsor the production of a solo CD.
He has taught Keyboard Studies, Music Theory, and Twentieth Century Music Literature, amongst others, at Muskingum University. He earned the Doctor of Arts in Music and Master of Music degrees from Ball State University and Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees from Lewis and Clark College. Abeyaratne has previously been on the keyboard faculties of Marshall University and Manchester College (IN). His piano teachers include Mary Billimoria, Ann Schaffert Miller, and Bob Palmer.
This fall semester, Abeyaratne has performed a Liszt/Schumann program at the Dover Grace Lutheran Church (OH), Muskingum University, and the Ohio State University. During this academic year, he will also perform Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue with the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds; in "An Evening of Music with the CEOMTA" at Graves Piano; and in the Alato Trio fall concert.
Abeyaratne is also a passionate tennis player and resides in New Concord, Ohio.
Robert Jones is Coordinator of Choral Activities and conducts the Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, Choral Society, and Alumni Choir, in addition to teaching applied voice.
Professor Jones received the Bachelor of Science in Music Education degree from Muskingum College, and the Master of Science in Voice degree from the Julliard School of Music, where he was leading tenor of its opera department.
He has performed with such prestigious choral organizations as New York City's Camerata Singers, Music Aeterna, Musica Sacra, Amor Artis, the National Chorale, and was, for sixteen years, soloist at the Fort Washington Collegiate Church in New York City.He has appeared with the opera companies of Cincinnati, Cleveland, Dallas, Dayton, Kansas City, Toledo, and Miami, to name only a few, and has been a featured soloist with the New York Philharmonic and Boston Symphony orchestras. Further credits include several public televison opera productions and other television appearances. Recently, Jack Beeson's operas, "The Sweet Bye and Bye" and "Captain Jinks of the Horse Marines", in which Professor Jones stars, have been released on compact disc.
He is a frequent adjudicator, clinician, guest conductor, and guest soloist, and is a member of the American Choral DirectorsAssociation, the Ohio Choral Directors Association, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Actors Equity, the American Guild of Musical Artists, Music Educators National Conference, and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, national men's music fraternity. Professor Jones is also a member of the Katherine B. Geis Scholarship committee.
